To Stop That Goodbye - Poem by Gert Strydom

There is a girl in Cape Town
who at a time I met
and entranced
a bit later we wed

and only God does comprehend
what made us part
and brought every thing to a end
and froze her heart
with polar snow
and still I do not know,

for she could smile
like a angel
and it was like
the sun rising
and we had a glorious summer

and all of my tomorrows
and yesterdays
I would have lived with her

but youth and passion
had its own way
and there was nothing
that I could do or say
to stop that goodbye.

I can relate, twice before I came too close to the flame, but am safe and content with my ball and chain, scratching my head wondering what love is like a fish might be curious what a splash of cool water on a hot day might be like (Report) Reply
