At Times Love Has Visited Me - Poem by Gert Strydom

At times love has visited me
and left, left me
and has gone away.
It has gone to different shores,
leaving hurt, sadness
and the want for somebody
to be steady with

and every time like a fool, I am caught
in the snares that love sets,
believing in its charm, believing
that it really exists

as something more than mere passion,
as something greater
than all wants and needs
and the hope keeps alive
flickering like a candle in my heart,
for a real relationship to start.

A finely written piece. I agree with the terms honest, direct, and open. A painfully honest evaluation of the vulnerability we allow in the hopes of gaining a lasting love. An exercise so often ending in pain and regret. To turn such pain and darkness into the beauty of art is the blessing and curse of the poet.
    Well done, good poet.

Congratulations Gert, am so glad to see your penning again, it deserves to be on the first page. Great food for thought. You speak so well of the hunger (for holding hands and hugs) of our flesh and blood, wonder if we may manage to ignore it and also lower our expectations might it be possible to celebrate a different sort of love, inclusive, limitless, eternal? At Times Love...
    gert,

first time reading one of yours. i like the simplicity and directness of this poem.

do you distinguish between love and infatuation? is love a feeling or a choice for you? have you experienced in a long-term relationship that infatuation (it is a delightful feeling) can be rekindled? we do need love; it's one of the basic food groups; it transforms our perspective and sustain us through a whole lot of the negative.

are you familiar with laurie van der hart's poems? she comes from your part of the world; perhaps you'll enjoy reading her.

p.s. i think ravi a's comments below are wise. did you know that the greek language has four words for love? as i remember them they are eros, phileo, storge, and agape- this last being the unconditional type. g.k.

    Conditional love
Love in this world is often conditional and not unconditional. This is the difficulty. We often expect love to happen but it won't. We are experimenting with love in various ways. Such experiments won't yield any result. Can we approach life and people with unconditional love? This is the basic issue. In that case, even if the world may desert you, even if your lover may leave you, you won't get hurt and mentally bruised. Moreover, our unconditional love will be always heard and won't be lost also. We haven't tried out this technique. We are expecting too much in the reciprocation of love. That is also conditional. Congrats. Nice poem. So true, being IN love, so often transient. It was S Covey coining love as a do-word, rather than a feeling. (Report) Reply
