Today I Sang To Dawn Poem by Mohammad Younus

Today I Sang To Dawn

Today, I sang to dawn,
Though dawn has long sung to me.
Its voice rose in gold and silver hues,
Brushstrokes on the day's shimmering crown,
A canvas alive with whispers,
Confidential, intimate—
Urging me to cast off the night's heavy cloak,
To rise from the deep wells of slumber
And greet the light with open arms.

I heard the honey of the sun,
Fresh and sweet, pouring gently
Into the throats of birds.
Their songs became a symphony,
A hymn of gratitude rising heavenward:

'Whatsoever is in the heavens
and whatsoever is on the earth
glorifies Allah.
His is the dominion, and to Him belong
all praises and thanks,
and He is Able to do all things.'

I stood still, listening—
As one does before receiving
A gift too profound for words,
A treasure from God—
The Most High, the Most Gracious.

The morning air embraced me,
A fragrant breath of jasmine and dew,
Its melody sinking into my bones,
Filling the hollow spaces of my being.

How effortlessly dawn bestows its blessings—
Each ray of light, a messenger of renewal,
Each bird's trill, a promise of joy.
And in that sacred moment,
I sang not to be heard,
But to join creation's unending choir,
Letting my voice be carried,
A ripple in the vast ocean of praise.
