Today, I See My Soldier Leave Poem by Elizabeth Gaytan

Today, I See My Soldier Leave

Today, I seen him leave, not because he left me
or because he found someone else.
But for his country he goes to fight.
Today, I see my soldier leave and fight a war
on the other side of the world.
So far he goes to hear the bullets shatter
and the bombs go off in the silence of the night.
Tonight, I sleep without him, my nights feel lonely and cold.
My days are long, hours seem like years.
I sit and wait for his return.
As time goes by, I pray for his safe return.
Today, I seen a wife get a knock at her door,
and there was the uniformed man.
To give her the sad news,
I watch how see screamed in pain.
Tonight, I cried myself to sleep hoping that you are okay.
Now, when I hear the door bell ring, I am afraid to answer.
Thinking that I will receive the same sad news.
But I know you will come home safe.
Because I will wait for you forever,
even in the silence of the night.
