Topwater Friends Poem by Kelly Zion

Topwater Friends

Where are friends when you need them most?
Everyone is just a ghost
a wisp of person
a figure undefined
a shadow of humanity
left behind.

We float on this pool of life
gravity brings us side by side
and we pretend to care
but if I sink down
you’ll just float away
and I’ll be left to drown.

Bobbing along we smile politely
someone once told us we should be friendly
but friendly is just ‘like a friend’
you wouldn’t swim down deep
to save somebody’s heart,
you’d just watch them sink beneath.

I see them swimming all around
ignoring by bubbles for help
I can’t hear them anymore
but I can see the end
and at least there there won’t be any
‘topwater friends.’
