Tortoise's Wimple

that a tortoise slowly turns its head in
and slowly draws its head forward from
and rests its head half out of:
I wonder was it simple

to call that skin its wimple?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
8.5.22. Lawrence's poem 'Baby Tortoise'. My dictionary only says it's: a cloth headdress covering the head, neck, and the sides of the face, formerly worn by women and still worn by some nuns.
