Translations

(to Hans Christian Andersen)

she says 'teardrop'
which translates 'earring'
or the slip of a moon
left behind to shine
to waver with the lustre of pearl
in the dimming evening
what are words anyway
compared with the brilliance
of stars clouded over
the eye of the nightingale
ruby in its setting
the Emperor, breaking down.
