Trying To Remember Poem by Alanna Flynn

Trying To Remember

It’s been a few short weeks since I saw him last.
And a few longer since he held me.
His last words were simply “It’s me, not you.”
But days before “Without you, what would I do? ”

I try to remember
What love is
Where we came from
And how we ended up here.

How can one switch tracks so fast?
Giving up on something so valued
Only because it is tough?

Love doesn’t come easy, baby.
And neither do I.
If letting go is your solution
Then I mine as well try.

I struggle to paint a picture in my mind.
For a moment I can’t imagine him.
I can’t recall the slightest detail.
I can’t feel him.
I am numb

All of a sudden, a young couple walks by
Lovingly,
Hand in hand,
Dancing in bliss,
And I remember.

A uniquely patterned hat
Atop a mess of brown curls
That falls into sea green eyes
With frosted with just a hint of blue.

A bit of scruff
Lining his jaw’s flawless shape
Climbing up the slight curves of his chin

Underneath the stubble
Lies an accent to his smile
Two dimples which reveal
A short-lived intent of denial.
