Two Bits And A Bottle Of Wine

Rating: 5.0

They take the path they know, or at least so they are told
The burden they carry is self imposed, they pretend it is not so
Their life is stretched before them clearly marked along the way
Squandering away precious hours, another X to mark each day
Pretending to work the controls they carry on their masquerade
They primp their feathers daily in the safe cozy nests they have made
How sad to see this scene played out, this tired twice told tale
How could they know when starting out, that their energy would fail
They sold their dreams so cheap and pawned their bliss for chains
Cold naked shivering sheep, never to find green pastures again
I will trade all of this for a song, two bits and a bottle of wine
Then crossing the misty bridge I will claim some far kingdom as mine.

I thought this poem was about people in prison haha, just goes to show you how you can write something so very well but different meanings are found within. Brilliantly written, excellent 10

I had to laugh a bit. After reading your comments I had to do a re-read. It sure sounds like it is about a couple with the nest and the dreams traded cheap. Actually it is about people in general and conformity and a loss or surrendering of happiness for the cheap baubles and beads that our culture hands and consumerism dazzles people with. Find a bridge and avoid the crowded valley of discontent down below.

Well, this is depressing, but well written. Maybe I'm jaded too, but I read this as a failing marriage or long-term relationship between a couple that doesn't end well. I like the ending couplet, which rejects all comfortable notions of a typical relationship for something better. I like the image of crossing a bridge and claiming a better kingdom. At the least, the poem makes the reader stop and think about what they might consider the best course of action in human relations and to consider the possibility of other ways.
