Un Apercu.(Translation) .
Je me suis apercu un moment a travers un interstice,
D'une foule de travailleurs et de conducteurs dans la salle d'un bar
autour de la poele tard une nuit d'hiver, et moi inapercu assis
dans un coin,
D'un jeune homme qui m'aime et que j'aime moi, qui s'approche
silencieusement et 1l s'assied tout pres, pour me tenir ala main,
Longtemps parmi les bruits de va-et-venir, de boire et du juron et de blague grossiere,
en parlant peu, peut-etre aucun mot.

The scene is late night in a bar-room, where workmen are talking and joking noisily and the poet is sitting in a corner alone. He is joined by by a young man whom he loves, and they hold hands in a contented silence.The fact is that Whitman was bi-sexual and open about it. He also had romances with women. I give the facts from the poem, make no judgments.
