Uncongenial Shadow Poem by Ridah Ellahi

Uncongenial Shadow

Sitting with a crowd,
But still feeling lonely.
My grievances are here,
They stand with me and hold me.

All my life,
I have only befriended one.
Never seen a ray of light.
Never seen the sun.

All my suffering,
Follows me like a shadow.
I cry my heart out to the ocean,
But even the ocean feels shallow.

I am stuck inside,
A net of misery that I’ve woven.
I sit alone and cry,
With eyes that are swollen.

The broken mirrors,
And the shattered vase.
Portray my frustration,
Portray my life’s hardest phase.

The bolted doors,
Show my attempt to be alone.
Never tried to break them,
Never tried to go back to a place called home.

They say home is where the heart is,
But my heart lies in this nothingness.
What will welcome me back home?
Nothing but pure darkness.

The sun smiles down,
Upon a new day.
Does not smile on me.
With my anguish, I sway.

The color black, defines my life,
All the troubles and the lies.
Anger building up inside,
Eats me away and eats my pride.
