- written for my son Shawn Michael Ryan, and in memory of George Floyd (October 14,1973—May 25,2020)

Unlike George Floyd, Shawn Michael Ryan, our son,
has survived brutal police attacks— that's the only difference.
The trauma, however, remains; the brutality is never far away.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Our son Shawn Michael Ryan has been attacked by police departments in Raleigh and Cary, North Carolina on many occasions, and each time the police have gotten away with brutalizing and traumatizing our son because the police departments involved refuse to launch investigations against the police officers involved.According to North Carolina state law, a North Carolina police agency does not have to permit or initiate an internal investigation upon citizen request. It is at the sole discretion of the NC police agency how it proceeds, or does not proceed, no matter how heinous the alleged crime involving its officers.
