Unlikely To Survive Poem by Theresa Ann Moore

Unlikely To Survive

Sturdy stems with thorns
pierce as I shriek…
resistant to separate
from clinging custody
The wind skims across
my numbing cheek
as the resilient roses
are detached abruptly

Days of November
are getting much colder
Tonight there will be
a deadly veil of icy frost
The season ends…
no time for getting older
Lasting fragrance is cherished
not disrespectfully tossed...

It is my intention to extend
the life of the blooms
If only for a few more days
in a crystal vase
A summer-like warmth
fills the dining room
as pastel petals display
their beauty with grace...

Ultimately fate
will take control
Slowly smooth edges
fray with brown
One by one petals
weaken and begin to fall
as one last bud
struggles to rebound
