Vanilla Ice Cream Poem by Mark Heathcote

Vanilla Ice Cream

Vanilla ice cream sugared with salt
That's the kind of love I've tasted all my days
Cold and bitter, it nearly brings a tear to my eyes
Swollen, like they've been pepper sprayed
But honestly, I still love ice cream
And vanilla is a dream if it's melting into cream.

That's the kind of love I adore
But it's wafer thin and never lasts for very long
Till it turns bittersweet and loses its glow
No matter how many scoops you have
No matter how many scoops you desire
Something always sours the dough, don't you know?

I guess it's time to change my ice cream
Maybe this time, I'll sit back and let them pick
And see how it feels to be wanted, not thwarted
And see how it feels to be reptilian with a twist
Nothing acrimonious hissing
But more like a lotus blossom kissing?
