Voice Beyond The Beauty And The Body Poem by Sangeeta Chakraborty

Voice Beyond The Beauty And The Body

We women possess much more beyond our beauty and bodies.
No, I am not talking about the great women,
who have achieved milestones.
I am talking about the average among us.
Who lead simple lives for simple living.

And Why do we have to always prove ourselves
before being heard?
Why would they always judge us by our beauty and bodies?
Why would we have to dress and act like men,
so that they will take us seriously?

And yes, we, the average among us, love looking up our best.
No, not to always seek the world's attention.
It's just the way we are.
We have emotions that sometimes override logic.
But the irony is, we know it!

Because the average among us,
we were raised,
we grew up seeing this.
A girl being nurtured,
forced to take care of her beauty and body,
Else societies start talking, families become strained;

The whole year from birth,
you will make her realize that
beauty and body are all she has.
Hence when she steps into the world,
once again they will make her realize the same,
That beauty and body are all she has!

And where beauty stays, the brain dies, that's a belief!

We were given dolls from an early age.
And yes, we love dolls,
we love playing with them,
No, not those Pink Barbie dolls,
mine were fat and cute dark blue dolls.

I decorated her,
used to make her perfectly presentable to the world.
Little did I know,
the world would judge anyway,
even more,
With or without beauty.
Those who have, suffer,
those who don't, cry.
And the average one? ....doesn't matter.

To decorate my doll,
to make it a perfect bride,
to make it cute and sweet.
Cute and sweet? is the opposite of worldly matters.
Because cute and sweet are of no use,
except for beauty and the body.

That's what it is and will always be.
Call me a feminist,
But the average one, too,
has a voice that goes beyond beauty and body.

Now, sometimes we discard femininity
and embrace masculinity more,
to reflect power, to defend ourselves.
Then you say, she is too much.
Yes, she is too much!
As she possesses much more beyond beauty and body!

Now before you judge, give it a thought and a chance.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
As Women's Day approaches, I reflect on my experiences and observations. I know we all struggle to be heard in life, there is nothing new about it. Today, I share a few simple words based on my own journey. If my words offend you in any way, I apologize, but this story is a common one for many of us. Happy Women's Day to all!
