Once, a caged bird asked a free bird,
Why are you so free?
Don't you fear flying high?
Don't you hesitate to roam?
Aren't you scared of your many companions around? '
The free bird replied, 'Yes, I do fear sometimes,
But I have nothing to lose,
For I know I am homeless.
my home is in the fleeting,
I don't rely on stability,
My home is like a castle of sand
I chase illusions, seizing them,
Only to awaken to my senses.
I see the storm closely,
Getting used to them.
My senses are more strong now,
I can predict storms,
I can move with the storm,
I can walk hand in hand with a storm.
And what about you? Why are you caged?
The caged bird pondered and replied,
I think too much,
I am scared too much.
My senses are strong too.
I sense fear easily,
I sense pain.
I see my home,
I see my beloved every day.
Offering me with food and love,
taking care of me,
then putting me back in my cage.
At first, I struggled to swallow it,
But now I am used to it.
I am trapped in my love.
Trapped in my beloved's care and protection.
I see the love,
I see the constant care.
I accept the love,
I accept the security.
My home is stable and cozy,
and only mine,
My companion can't take it,
but my beloved can.
They own me.
They say protection and care is love,
They love me so much,
They don't want me to fly.
They fear I might lose my way,
They fear I might not return,
for they are lonely.
It's not a trap for them,
It's their love language!
And we have become habituated to it.
Now, I love being trapped,
I feel safe, stable.
Who can make you feel safe and stable?
The free bird asked, 'Who is truly safe?
Are you? Are you stable?
Protection and safety come with a price!
Loved this poem. It is a fantastic commentary on the human psyche. Freedom versus caged state! Each person has a different take on these, as the poet rightly observes.

2) I am reminded of a beautiful poem named "Vittayaykkuka"(Let me out) by late Malayalam poet Nalapat Balamaniyamma. She was a Freedom fighter and mother of Anglo Indian poet Kamala Das.
