Dog barking in the night,
sleep fractures,
eyes squint
against the splinters
of the light
outside, all filled
with shadows,
strange world
of bundled shapes
that gather in the dark
confounding recognition,
nightscape inviting fear
so simply conquered
go back to bed
in search of sleep
and burrow deep
beneath the sheet.
