Wall-Ocracy Poem by Marianne Reninger

Wall-Ocracy

Rating: 5.0

2000 years ago, man built walls of mud and stone,
Long Ramparts to protect from invading hoards.
High towers loomed over the steppes, guarding against
Horses thundering hooves and raining arrow's soars.
Lords and Emperors built walls for silk road tariffs,
And Seawalls to buttress longboat's journeys from fjords.

Dark Ages brought Walls of Silence, when man retreated to
Convent Walls, to guard against disease, decay, and inquisition.
Time passed, but did men learn, that walls create conditions that
Neither safeguard, nor problem-solve, nor advance their position?
'Tear Down that Wall' declared the politician. Free your population,
The Bear has been defeated.

Time and Uselessness wear away Walls.
Even one proposed of 2000 miles and 21 Billion.
Neither will they protect against nuclear clouds and winter.
'Colony's'wall descends magically from other worlds, and
Ryan Adams sings of his 'Wonder World'.
Our World's Wall would have to be a circle, no beginning, no ending,
No division. Only a Spiral, eternally spinning....

I like the phrase walls of silence. Now we face a wall of deceit. Joshua needs to blow his horn again.

Our World's Wall would have to be a circle, no beginning, no ending, No division. Only a Spiral, eternally spinning.... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Absolutely stunning conclusion to a beautifully written poem... it is my favorite kind of concluding line since it really does not conclude but sits in the reader's mind eternally spinning, eternally speaking to our hearts and minds. Building walls in this day and age is about as effective as spitting...upwind. 10++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It should read Ryan Adams sings of his Wonder Wall; poemhunter wouldn't take my correction. Marianne
