We Are Approached By A Monkey Poem by Dónall Dempsey

We Are Approached By A Monkey

We are approached
by a monkey
in a little half cocked fez
& a cute matching red waistcoat
before we have time to be surprised!

The monkey jumps
quickly on your shoulder
& has a quick word in your ear
as if to say:
“Dump the chump...I’m the chimp for you babe! ”

He hands out a bright enamelled mug
and rattles the money within.
We follow his leash
back to the photographer
who is already taking
our photo

with a big old fashioned flash.
We smile
and the monkey smiles too.
