What Am I? Poem by Mohammad Younus

What Am I?

I am not a student,
for I haven't joined any madrasah or pathshala.
I am not a teacher,
for I have guided no protégé.
I have not grasped the holy manuscripts,
for I am neither mullah, guru,
pastor, rabbi, nor monk.
I am neither drunkard nor cupbearer,
for the sacred wine I do not serve as drink.
I am not a piligrim to some sacred place,
for the holiest shrine lies within me.
I neither seek heaven nor fear hell,
for the divine realm resides constantly within.

What more do I require?
Then, what am I?
My identity, to myself,
is known to me best.
I am no angel,
for I possess free will.
I am no Iblis,
for I have not rebelled.
I am not celestial,
for I walk upon this earth.

I am the divine command,
in the form and frame of
flesh and bone.
The divine command
is surely my truest essence.
