What Brothers And Sisters Do Poem by Jim Yerman

What Brothers And Sisters Do

He was born 10 years before her…yet he found it so hard to resist her
for he was her big brother…and she his little sister.

He watched her take her first steps say her fist words…he experienced her charms…
and she would always feel safe and secure…
in her big brother's arms.

When she was young he helped to feed her,
sometimes he read to her in bed…
and he never seemed to mind at all
when she jumped upon his head.
because it seemed from the moment she was born
their spirits were alined…
and he knew a big brother…needed to be patient…
to be kind

As they grew up together…he remained ever compassionate…never cruel.
They still found time to spend together…he even picked her up from school…
and he sometimes had her dinner ready
and helped with homework too…
because he loved his little sister…
and that's what big brothers do!

Now he's heading off to school…and as they walked together hand in hand
perhaps they wondered where the time had gone…
that this came sooner than they planned.
It was here the little sister leaned on her big brother
and with a tear about to dawn…
"I love that you're my big brother." she said.
"and I will miss you when you're gone."

He clasped her hand a little tighter…
Then whispered, "I will miss you too…"
as they bravely faced their futures together…
For that's what brothers and sisters brothers do…
