What Does It Mean Poem by Mark Heathcote

What Does It Mean

Loves a flame that can be doused to harden steel
But to remain nimble-and-soft, porous, permeable
As the land reaching out to the ocean is better
Then climbing insurmountable-mountains
Only to ascertain you've reached the summit alone.

Now we've unknot from one another.
Like we never were, never knew one another.
Does it mean the vine has fallen from the tree?
Does it mean a flower bud never blossomed?
Does it mean two beads of sweat didn't mingle?

Darling, all love is universal, owing nothing to itself
It exists like the shadow to bow and humbly follow
So even if you leave me or me, you
To sing soprano or vibrato,
We are both extras in a tableau-written play anyway.
