What's It For? Poem by Danny Draper

What's It For?

Jack hammers gnaw and gnaw
Pummelling rock thumping,
What's it for?
What's it for?
We're building the city
Better than before,
What's it for?
What's it for?
Never a chance to tether this beast
Change is certainty best unleashed,
What's it for?
What's it for?
Realising value on all vacant space
When it's covered there is no more,
What's it for?
What's it for?
Trees plucked ephemeral once more
Horizon now walls rooves and doors,
What's it for?
What's it for?
City swells a fantastic cake
Covering all as it does bake,
What's it for?
What's it for?
The old must go green space implore
But new needs room so it's ignored,
What's it for?
What's it for?
No faux pastiche or kind restore
Will ever be what was here before.
What's it for?
What's it for?
To realise its full monetary potential
Impinging niceties, inconsequential.
