What The World Does To The Lovers Is A Crime Poem by Patti Masterman

What The World Does To The Lovers Is A Crime

You've got to have all the love and desire,
all the angst and craving, beat out of you.

You've got to have all the shyness and dreams,
romantic notions and tentative flirting, punished.

You've got to retract all those words spoken in passion;
deny, regret that you sometimes have fallen in love at first sight.

Then, you'll finally be fit-
to forget.
