When I Went To School Poem by Randy McClave

When I went to school
I was told not to be mean or cruel,
So, I never supported a racist or a bully
Because, I was not evil, hateful or unruly.

When I went to school
I was told to follow the golden rule,
I never knocked those who were poor
Because, they were my neighbors outside my door.

When I went to school
For no one was I better than by acting cool,
My friends were whites and blacks
We were all neighbors and friends and we had each other's backs.

When I went to Sunday school
I was baptized there in a pool,
I was taught to follow Jesus and not to never lie or cheat or steal
And to never spread rumors or to gossip or to kill.

When I became a man
I remembered from where I had began,
I was taught not to support or fight for a lying, cheating or a sinful person
And never to swear or belittle or to be vulgar or cursin'.
I was told to never take that type of woman as my wife
Because, all that it would bring me would be sorrow and hate and strife,
And I was taught never to support that type of leader for my country as well
Because if I did, I would be seeking and supporting a life in Hell.
