When Two Elephants Fight Poem by Caleb Adegbite

When Two Elephants Fight

The square is quiet and still
but this calm is not of peace
the birds above no longer sing
and rats below have stopped to squeal.
This is what comes to be when two elephants fight
the ground quakes with trembling rumbles
and the youths sit idly by.
All we can do is wait and watch as the fight for our fate ensues,
a battle for our future that we ourselves cannot fight.

The High chieves of 'Igovani' have promised a better tomorrow
and the Rebels of 'Azu' claim that only them can train leaders of tomorrow
so they grapple and shove with no sign of compromise.
While the fields of knowledge gets infested with weeds
and our seats of learning are lined with webs.
We listen hard for a yell of victory or a cry of defeat,
but only the grunts of struggle make their way into our expectant ears.
Stranded, we wait and watch,
while the sands of time drip out of our grasp.
