Where Can We Meet? Poem by Mark Heathcote

Where Can We Meet?

Where can we meet?
Where can we meet?
What can I still do to influence you?
No one leaves me.
No, I'm not cruel.
You misunderstand what I am after.
No, I don't long for your love.
Or your sweet willowy breath.
No, I am not frozen.
No, I am not about to cry.
Where can we meet?
Where can we meet?
Be it the park on the bench where we first kissed
Be it the coastline following the shadow
That wanders without rest.
Where can we meet?
Where can we meet?
Be it at the tram stop.
Say you'll meet me there.
Say you'll meet me there.
Say you'll not speak of the past.
Say you'll not speak at all.
I'll do all the talking.
I'll do all the talking, darling, mine.
And we'll sit blindfolded until the sun is gone.
And when we're tired
Like fishermen fishing in the lake, I'll pack away.
The moon and stars
In order -you can move on.
Pretend, oh, like you belong.
Like a flower blossom on fire to pay its rent, my old flame.
What can I still do to influence you?
No one leaves me.
No, I'm not cruel.
Don't you know you misunderstand me?
And every woman you've ever loved.
You don't know how hard it is to love forever.
Take off all your chains and clothes and stand naked like a thorn on a rose stem.
Oh, shallow, forgetful men.
Where can we meet?
Where can we meet?
Oh, shallow, forgetful lover
Say you'll meet me there.
Say you'll meet me there again and not next year.
