Why Be A Poet Poem by Matthew Holloway

Why Be A Poet

Why be a writer, an artist
a musician or anyone of creative substance
leaving yourself open, naked
there for the judgment of all critics
where the worst is yourself
the hardest most prolific reviewer
picks apart each doubt and inadequacy
why pour you all and everything into that
presented to the world strips you bare
why be a writer, artist, musician
why be a creator at all
is it worth the cost you gift
is it that fateful addiction
consuming what is left of you
why be a writer, artist, musician
why be a poet at any time
what is its worth
