Why Do We Define Poem by Francis Duggan

Why do we define people by their material or financial success
By their so called social standing or their postal address
By the size of their home, swimming pool and car
These things tell us nothing of the person you truly are
Since the person you are does live in your mind
Are you one who is generous, compassionate and kind
Are you one of those who gives to receive
And on a fair go for all do you truly believe
The good things you do for others as a person says more about you
Than all of the good things for yourself that you do
They possess a great gift those who have empathy
And are of far more value to humanity
Than some of the wealthy people on your side of the town
Who on their climb to material success have dragged others down.
