With The Nourishing

Rating: 5.0

Growing tomatos for me at least
Is not just to reap the rewards of harvest
I would not lessen the experience
By boring myself with the practical

With faith I watch it claim the soil
A steadfast stalk showing leaves of promise
Spreading arms in all directions
Forms rise then meet in deepest green

A wink from the sun and the buds are awake
Towering now making love to the rays
Welcomed winged wonders hover and light
Unseen by our busy eyes, a zillion times over

By and by the magic is revealed
Tiny nubs of green expand and then blush
Luscious ruby gems test the sturdy stems
Seeds that flourished, with the nourishing

I so agree....a garden is magic...and I love it when those green tomatoes turn to red. And the taste of a tomato just picked off the vine is definitely heaven. Your poem is lovely Edmund! :) Pam (Jette)

I JUST HARVESTED tomatoes today. i love the smell the plants give off as i brush against them. Beach Girl, a PH poet and big perfume fancier, says there is at least one perfume which smells like tomato plants; i think the plants, not fruits. so many wonders in nature, mostly unobserved by us perhaps. certainly you have done a good job helping us to see what we don't take the time to see. and, of course, we don't see all that stuff in a grocery store! to MyPoemList. bri :)

There is something healing to the soul about gardening- -working outside in the fresh air and sun, planting the seeds of life and nurturing them into growth and fruitfulness. I know its mean-spirited of me but I look forward to eating those lush full-of-taste home-grown ripened on the vine tomatoes.... drool. I guess it is not only plants that t flourish with the nourishing... :)

I am assuming that you have not seen honeybees? Other bees seem plentiful enough and when I survey the areas where clover grows wild or certain wildflowers I do in fact find honeybees but I must agree that they are never as plentiful as I recall them to be. Many are the times that being barefoot meant soaking a pulsating foot in a fountain or creek. I am so glad that I am not allergic to their sting or the poison ivy that laced the pathways of childhood.

Sigh. I have not seen one bee visiting my flowers in 11 years- -I do have, however, hordes of wasps visiting the flowers. If only people would wake up and stop using pesticides.

The gardening is actually what? A connecting to life, to the ability to create and enjoy with eyes and taste the fruits of our easy labor. Plant flowers and bees, flies, butterflies and the occasional hummingbird will grace your world and somehow within that growth if we quiet ourselves we connect with the positive nature of the universe, the hopeful optimistic currents. Many are the times that space and the present fall away and as I stand and give the colorful world a welcomed drink I think of many things and am transported to a better place while never leaving the swaying shadows of the zinnia or hibiscus. As for tomatoes I must brag and say that they are numerous and when the evenings get cooler I have chili on my mind! !
