Woman And Shame Of Men - Poem by Elizabeth Padillo Olesen

A woman of beauty, guarded by morality,
now stands fallen after the gang rape
by men who see her as mere commodity.

She, a young girl of tender age, is attacked
by beastly men to feed their eros and egos..

And they leave her alone on the open road
like a trampled and rotten flower and
left her behind to die in shame before a dark future
in the land that exalts sexual purity of these women.

The law of the land that is more patriarchal
refused to see the crime of these beastly men
and covered the case by closing its ears and eyes.

Now the public is fed up: people come marching on
the streets to demand that this beastly attack
should stop and must not happen again to any woman.

Let their march shame the men who look at women
as objects of lust to attack, trample and pluck.

Poet's Notes about The Poem

December 28,2012
Written after following the demonstrations taking place in India these days as response to the gang rape of a young woman. The public is declaring a stop to low valuing of girls or women in society.

The crime can't be brushed away anywhere, even in India, thinking of the seriousness of this crime. Heartfelt poem and it is really disturbing a lot 1 (Report)Reply
