Women Of The Bible...Jochebed Poem by Shaun Cronick

Women Of The Bible...Jochebed

Rating: 5.0

Only twice in the Bible is Jochebed mentioned by name.
Just in short references that she was,
The daughter of Levi.
And was Amram's wife and bore three sons.
And the story behind the latter.
Yet she was the mother of the greatest,
Man in Israelitish history.
Moses!
We all know what she did next,
Putting him in a basket (a wooden chest of bulrushes) ,
Then sending him floating away on the Nile.
To avoid the Pharaoh's cruel decree.
Knowing that God would take care of him.
To be found and by the Pharaoh's,
Kind hearted princess daughter,
Who adopted him.
And later smiles broke through Jochebed's tears,
Upon learning of this she turned to her husband,
Amram and said...
'To think he will live in a palace,
And be surrounded by luxury.'

And some people seem to forget the other half,
Of Jochebed's biblical story.
Which is this...

Jochebed was later employed by the Pharaoh's daughter,
To nurse the child and return him to her later,
Who would then again readopt him and then call him her son.
And in that reunited, loving time she educated him.
In the history and religion of Israel.
So that Moses would never lose,
His original Hebrew identity.
And Jochebed kept her faith in God.
This is where her story ends.
