Meri cHoti si rooh
tumain yaad hai?
Ek baar tum
lakDi k takhnoN pe chal kar
rait main banay ek lakDi k ghar
gayi thee.
Ye bahut pehli baat hai.
Suraj ne harf taraf
paaniko chaka rakha thaa
aur jahan bhi tu baithi
vo raasta tunahara tha.
Kuch din subah ko
sagar ko jaata raasta chup chap
tin pe lagi khronch sa tha
aur kuch din itna chamkata tha
dekha na jaa sata tha.
Aur fir gaib ho jaata tha.
CHoti si rooh,
ageebi to ye hai -
Abhi bhi kaafi waqat hai.

Wood. Salt. Tin. - Poem by Jane Hirshfield
Little soul,
do you remember?
You once walked
over wooden boards
to a house
that sat on stilts in the sea.
It was early.
The sun painted
brightness onto the water,
and wherever you sat
that path
led directly to you.
Some mornings
the sea-road was muted
scratched tin,
some mornings blinding.
Then it would leave.
Little soul,
it is strange —
even now it is early.
