World Health Day - Make Time For Remedy Not Remorse Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

World Health Day - Make Time For Remedy Not Remorse

With hopes and despair in our hearts
with no prognosis of when it will pass
days keep passing into months and years
and everyone accepts the fate that gears;
vaccinations have tried to find a cure
yet no one devoid of fear sleeps or wakes
no one on the streets without anxiety just walks
no one without a reason talks to a foe or a friend;
everyone keeps forgetting the rules they have to obey
yet everyone keeps safe distance from one another
everyone wears a face mask or waits indoors;
doctors and nurses keep working round the clock
trying to keep the suffering away from suffocation and block;
covid warriors provide their own hard work
to bring the sick and infected to hospitals
or take them to a place of rest when they demise,
everywhere all over the world is worry and grief
everywhere is sympathy and compassion indeed
yet eyes don't lose the sight of rushing ambulances
and just like a child that keeps watching his kite
whether it will rise high to touch the far away skies,
one keeps hoping he will get out of the hospital alive;
and as each one loses a child or a parent
as each one loses a brother or a sister
as each one loses a friend or a neighbor
each one has their own story of grief and sorrow;
and as health has lost its essence as best wealth
heath has become a topic of great concern and care;
either one gets infected with the virus and lands in a hospital
or luck permits one to escape its pain and wrath.
O world' where will we find a place to hide
when will we have no remorse or regret?
when will the invisible enemy stop being so dangerous
when will it stop choosing its victim without any compassion?
and though many laureates have won so many awards
and though many inventions have found so many remedies.
man still falls helpless in this trajectory of infection
where covid is the command and the power
that makes our world so worried and vulnerable;
and as no one knows who is next to face it,
no one knows who is next to pray to God and ask for justice as this virus like a silent criminal causes so many deaths
while the world is still beautiful here on this earth
where everyone is waking up to see the dawn that promises
sunshine to the ones who escape or survive the virus
as no greater mentor exists than self-resilience.
