When I see the greatness thou art,
An infinite radiant arc,
I muse on my minuscule part—
Me a fumbling distant spark;
Beside thee— a precious diamond,
A carbon I'm as a charcoal;
Beside an ocean pole-to-pole,
Me, but a land-locked stagnant pond;
Against an infinite, one whole,
I am a struggling, puny soul.
But when I see the truth—that how
Thou art same as I and I thou,
And if thou art a complete whole,
Me too, no less a complete whole,
One whole born of another whole,
And still, I scarce my promise see,
O Lord, here's the struggling me,
Lost in my own vastness, mid-sea!
A seed potential that may sprout,
Who hath planted this germ of doubt?
