Yuan Mu: Where You See Water But No Rice, It Is Not Congee

From "The Sui Yuan Menu" Sub-Menu "Rice and Congee"
-by Yuan Mu (1716-1797)
-Translated by Frank C Yue

Where you see water but no rice,
It is not congee.
Where you see rice but no water,
It is not congee.
Water, rice should be homogenized;
Where one they are all,
And it's smooth and fine -
Only then, congee can this be call'd.

見水不見米,非粥也;
