Veerankutty Poems

Sitting in a room
Where only echoes are stored
Thinking that without echoes
All the voices on this earth
Might have been dead at birth.

You can wipe out all the voices with ease
But what will you do with echoes ?
I know now why the bamboos are in the valleys.

Hills without a voice
Gathering the echoes
For a time drowned in silence.

Late comer did not hear the flute playing
She only collected its echoes and left.
The butterfly has gone,
The flutter still remains on the petals

Listen to the stars carefully
Their echoes have golden hues.

Even when all the sounds are wiped out
The earth might live some more time
By spending the echoes frugally.

A truck have been spotted in the city
Carrying echoes
For making them impotent.

It is impossible to predict
What will happen to the voices
Mortally wounded with bullets.
All the dungeons of this world
won't be sufficient
To imprison all their echoes

...

Best is which word
To say the love?
Stay silent
And may come to know.
...

How vast is the sky
Of a bird
Without the worry
That someday
Someday there's death.
...

You
Should
Look at me,
Amid the trees.
I would be
Looking at you too,
Likewise.
It is just to see,
Who would be the first
Among us
To dry up;
When summer
Arrives.
...

One should ask the hurricane
About the patience needed to teach
Ancient trees,
Dance.
The effort is lesser comparatively,
To teach singing to
The bamboo groves.
Still,
It is interesting to watch
How the tree solves the problem of
Inability to move its feet,
Through gestures.
The tree stares
With desire,
As the rain dances
A Tillana*
Its feet on the edges of
The fragile glass vessel
Of the Lake.
And daily,
The Karakattam*
Of the glass blades
Balancing the dew drops
On their heads.
The wind that got trapped
Even as it started to dance,
Within a ball-
Is not letting it touch
The ground anymore.
Having lost the ball,
The child stands crying-
Unable to follow
Its dance steps.
^^^^
*
Tillana- In Kuchipidi form of classical dance originating in Andhra Pradesh, the dancer places her feet on the edges of a brass plate.
Karakkattam- In this folk dance form of Tamil Nadu, pots are balanced on the heads of devotees who dance around in praise of the Goddess.

Please, don't insist on making me say everything
This mountain is eloquent enough
To speak of solitude as
It stands still since
The very moment of it's birth.

Let the brook be obliged
To describe the jungle
With bursting laughter.

Of the weaving of dreams
I have nothing more to say
Than what the spider has to say.

The lean silhouettes in the street
May, well, create a murky panorama
Of hunger.

The dead has the sole right to
Speak of silence
And of God.

What I am driving at is this
A brave one has to come forward
To say ‘stop ranting' to those who have been babbling
All the while,
It'll be better if
It is someone from among you.

...

Will separate yellow from gold
Wetness from water and
Sprouting from the seed.

Can split
Slow-time from sloth.

Chance of a fall can be
Loaded down
From heights.

Will sieve fire to separate
Warmth and light.

Whip light
To sift the layer of white.

To do all these
Will someone turn this adamant snake
Into my magic wand again?
And hold me back from beginning to turn
Into a worm or an eagle?

Writing down the names
of the silence-breakers in the class,
I got them lashed well;
Never failed to put my hand on my mouth
Wherever I saw the instruction ‘Keep Silence';
Learned to be disciplined on the admonition ‘don't make noise';
Heard many a time the talk ‘Chatterers and Patriotism';
Hung on the wall the pictures of those
who ordered ‘hold your tongue and do work';
Practiced regularly special yoga for taming the tongue,
And got habituated to vow of silence.
Now my tongue owns the endurance of saying nothing
On seeing or hearing anything.
I haven't wasted even a single opportunity to escape
With the adornment of silence.
I live in total silence excelling the dumb
Now life is perfectly happy.
The fear of assaulting those with dissenting voices
No longer affects me.
The only discomfort is this:
An uncooked piece of flesh lies across my mouth,
Unable to spit out or swallow.

In the Sanatorium for trees By Veeran kutty

There is no place
Like the sanatorium for trees
To serve your probation.

The moon rubs its balm
On barren heads.
The rain rehydrates parched desires.
The Sun decongests swollen memories.
The wind rushes in with tincture and cotton wool
To dress the wounds.

Walk gently through the wards
Do not disturb
Over-ripe ambitions
Castrated longings
Papayas with unusually large breast
Punnagams on chemotherapy.

Walk on without fear
They are too disorganized
To remember you
Or the concoctions of death
You poured into them.

They stare stonily into the distance
As soothing hands unravel their matted hair
And pour lukewarm water on their heads.

Walk up the path
To the nursery for samplings
Sing with them
Take them in the deep woods
Along the giggling stream,
Leave them with their doting nannies
Turn back
Only to wave them goodbye.

Back in the wards
The odour of death
Hangs in the air.
There is no return;
You are sentenced to life
With the sun,
The rain
And the wind
In the sanatorium for trees.

POEM

A Poem About Freedom Veeran kutty

A feather fell off the wing
Ending its flight.

Dipping it in ink
I was beginning
To write a poem about freedom .

I hear it speak:
The feather never knows freedom
As it's fastened to the wing
And goes where the wing takes it
And folds when it does.

The wing also knows no freedom
As it is fixed to the bird's body
And must be tired
Going where bird goes.

The body too knows no freedom
As it is under the imprisonment of the mind.

Don't think the mind knows freedom
As the mind itself is enslaved to the soul forever.
And the soul is also not know absolute freedom
As it tied to eternity.

So where is pure freedom?
Do not know.

I hold the feather
Between my trembling fingers
And complete the nonsense poem
'Freedom'

...

In the ringing of bells
If there was no poetry
Would you have flocked to prayers
On hearing it?
...

A feather fell off the wing
Ending its flight.

Dipping it in ink
I was beginning
...

Will separate yellow from gold
Wetness from water and
Sprouting from the seed.
...

There is no place like the sanatorium for trees
To serve your probation.

The moon rubs its balm
...

What is there
For the last leaf on the tree
To gloat over?

Leuteten die Glocken
nicht voller Poesie,
eilte niemand mehr
um zu beten.

Riefen die Fischhändler
nicht voller Poesie,
an dem Tag blieben
die Käufer fern.

Wüssten die Blumen nicht,
ob sie heute oder morgen blühen,
gäbe es keine Nacht voller Poesie.

Dennoch
