45 Wondrous Years Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

45 Wondrous Years

Forty five years of love and harmony
forty five years of mutual respect and melody
forty five years of fantastic realities
forty five years of heaven on earth
that ‘earth on heaven' which we have to
never discover or locate
as our unity was so worthy of each other
wherever we lived or traveled many miles together.
Winners always, sinners never
joyous always, discontent never
such was life at the start and until this day
yet from others incessantly and consistently
we faced so much of jealousy and jeopardy
as those were the ones who could never see
or accept our blessedness and serenity
cause as we walked, we stumbled
but always stood up again
and with all our own strength we forged ahead
while those who envied us could never stand up
as once they fell in that pond of hostility
they could never pick themselves up
or walk out of it again;
and though life gave them many opportunities
to swivel away their hatred and be gentle
they could never withdraw themselves
from their ego and absurdness,
as they had no humbleness or dignity
and they could never succeed
to overtake us for years
while we got ahead and won
the golden medal of self-fulfillment.
And as our enemies kept crawling with
their determination to destroy our bliss
it was so continuous but we always found our way
to the top of the hill and retrieved our peace
with fresh air and fresh thoughts
as no greater gratification arises when
for forty five years of life a man and a woman
share the same love and affection, the same lust
and fascination since the day they promised
to be husband and wife in that church when
they took their vows to spend a lifetime together
in happiness and sickness, in poverty and wealth
and to always hold hands as they walk
their journey of life and love in harmony.
And the envy that our love and faithfulness
sparked in the eyes of our enemies
made those forty five years of our wedded life
so distinct, so special, so precious
as none could make our world to fall apart
only God stood alongside us and encouraged our tasks.
And all thro' our married life our sincerity soared so high
as our two hearts kept beating as one
though in different chests
where as one heart lighted the flame
the other heart glowed,
where if one heart kept burning less
the other heart made up the brightness
with its dedication and wonder;
was love the only power, the filament
that shines to disclose its faithfulness and fidelity?
Was love the only crime which made them so jealous?
And that love of forty five years that we shared
had walked thro' the wilderness of innocence
where faith and promises were so entwined
that love kept growing like a green creeper
on the moist wall by a waterfall.
And as years kept changing
into four and a half decades,
not an inch of commitment ever steered away
from our hearts that until the last breath
of our life ceases and one lays the other to rest
and sits alone in the nights to cry until eternity,
God will still unite us again in heaven
and hand us back our glory of unity
when our souls will meet someday in paradise.
