.6. Left Behind Poem by David Threadgold

.6. Left Behind

As moving day approaches
We pack our goods and chattels
With care we wrap them neatly
Dropped one and now it rattles

We take down all the pictures
And pack them each with care
The mirror from the mantle top
Now leaves the wall so bare

Removing every screw and hook
Left lying on the sill
Now lots of little holes appear
That we will have to fill

The walls show signs of shadow
An outline from each frame
A wall clock from the dining room
Left shadows just the same

Our deadline for the moving
Once seemed so far away
All the jobs have mounted up
We’d left until today

One final push to fill the holes
Our packing fills the lorry
But shadows show where we have been
And won’t paint out, so sorry
