A Couples Romantic Night

by Emdad Shah

Beside the Atlantic's whispering, restless steep
Thy burning eyes outshone the starry deep
All love of earth within our glances met
Where boundless azure wore a kohl-dark jet
We fled together toward some shore unknown
By sudden gusts of coastal tempests blown
The silver moon upon a pinion flew
And stars confessed a love they scarcely knew.

Along the winding coast we danced in light
As headlamps flickered through the velvet night
Save for us two, upon the gentle sand
And quiet whispers of the sea and land
The tinkling anklets of the deep were still
And every rose on fire upon the hill.

Our silent vows were spoken without tongue
While earthbound words remained, as yet, unsung
Apart from all, alone, celestial-fair
Thy glances drifted through the midnight air—
To crests of white, to mountains proud and high
To shadowed woods beneath a slumbering sky
The midnight moon above the dark-veiled bay
Saw all the world in heavy trance-sleep lay
While we alone kept watch through starry gleams
And built a sea of love from silver beams.

Thy starry eyes compelled my soul to stay
And held me captive to a long delay
I mused upon the woes of mortal men
While thou wert heavenly manna to my ken
A quiet river, and a living rose
More dear than Eden where the lily blows.

All mortal beauty from thy vision broke
A bridge of wonder when the spirit woke
With owl-like gaze of ancient mystery blest
That stirred the deepest passion in my breast
Upon the midnight sands my footsteps pressed
Where naked soles left footprints in the west
And thou didst follow, close against my side
While through my veins a sudden storm-wind sighed
All hushed, all still—the world a silent dome
And only we, who found our way back home
Then swift the vision broke, the spell was sped—
What wondrous, endless night had round us spread!
