A Happy Soul - Poem by Nicholas Fulmer

As I sit here on this grassy knoll,
I wonder what makes a happy soul.
Man has sought for bliss untold,
Ever since the days of old.

Some say it’s in loves embrace,
So they go and find a pretty face,
But love has thorns that lay concealed,
Which destroy a man when revealed.

Other claim that’s what wealth offers,
So they go out and fill their coffers,
But soon they are consumed with need,
And are left despised for their greed.

“Friends and family will get you there! ”
That is what most declare,
But betrayal by those you hold close,
Will bring with it greater woes.

Many state it’s found in the church,
So out they go and pray and search.
My heart goes out to these fools,
For in the church hypocrisy rules.

As I sit here on this grassy knoll,
I wonder what makes a happy soul.
Man has sought for bliss untold,
Ever since the days of old.

Maybe true happiness can’t be found,
Like an elusive snake left unbound.
Why can’t man just be content,
Instead of crying our lament?

I guess there’s not a reason to fret,
Just because I don’t have it yet.
Whether by luck or other design,
My search won’t cease until it’s mine.

Rhythm & Rhyme! The words just jumped off my tongue and danced along.
