A Loved One Lost Poem by Debbie Casey

A Loved One Lost

Rating: 3.8

The loss of a loved one is a hard thing to face,
The world speeds past, you can’t keep up the pace.

The minutes blur to hours and then into days,
Everything’s confusing, your mind in a haze.

This misery you fear will never end,
A pain your heart can’t comprehend.

In the silence of the night you ask yourself why?
And can’t find the strength to say goodbye.

Your eyes filled with tears, your heart broken in two,
It’s now that you wonder how you will make it thru.

But as the years start passing by,
You’ll notice the sunset in the sky.

The memories now bring a laugh and a smile,
You notice the tears haven’t flown in awhile.

Your life is now different, things aren’t the same,
But it can still be wonderful, even though it’s changed.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My late husband committed suicide on December 13th 2002. My entire life was turned upside down. I honestly didn't know how I could ever go on.

I went to all kinds of support groups but they just were not helping me deal with my grief. I could never have made it without the support of my family and friends. Especially my parents who took the boys and me under their wings unconditionally.

Everyone's grief is different. You cannot put a time frame or say what is normal and what is not when someone is dealing with grief. It is its own beast and must run its course. It took me 10 years to finally overcome the loss of my husband. When I lost him I lost my best friend and father to my children.

Until a couple of years ago, I honestly thought my life was to be filled with pain and suffering. I have grown a lot in the past few of years. Having grandchildren brought the joy back in my life. They were and are my light in the darkness.

Through my horrific experience (which is another story) , I have learned more than I care to know about grief. I could write a book about it as well as bipolar and suicide with the knowledge I have.

The phrase, 'Time will heal all wounds' was obviously written by someone who did not experience true grief. Time changes things: - You will never be the same person, but you will be a stronger person; You will never stop missing them, but you learn to live with it; You will always love them, but the memories bring joy.

Hello poet Debbie. WOW! I am so touched for you sharing your experience with your readers. The poem was great and very powerful and the author's notes were touching. May God's grace continue to strengthen you my friend. I post a piece earlier this week you might enjoy. It was inspired as I took part in a funeral of a young mother who committed suicide. It is titled, I'll Put Some Coffee On. Stay in touch, Loyd
