A Lunch Get Together Poem by Theresa Ann Moore

A Lunch Get Together

Rating: 5.0

Seeing one another over lunch is an opportunity
To shorten the distance of time…sustaining unity
A contact much more personal than a phone call
Where shall we meet…the local diner or at the mall?

Arriving and confirming… we haven’t changed a day
Though our children are grown and our hair is gray
Surveying the enticing menu…counting each calorie
Scrumptious entrees wickedly stimulate the salivary

Sipping water with clanking cubes while assessing
Deciding on a grilled chicken salad with no dressing
You choose a Ruben sandwich with pickle on the side
Reassured that it is much healthier that something fried

Now the main reason for convening for a noon meal…
Bring me up to date on the latest and how do you feel?
Smiles layered with occasional frowns and deep sighs
Relay resilience as we acknowledge and surmise

Our freshly prepared food appears …we take a pause
Smells and flavors shelve conversation and motivate jaws
The food is pleasing to the taste… satisfying the appetite
'All is good…' gives contentment to the last remaining bite

A second cup of coffee cools as departure time arrives
Time to return home and continue with our routine lives
Paying the bill and leaving a tip for an overworked waitress
Saying goodbye with a great big hug… feeling ageless
