A Mermaid's Lullaby Poem by Thoughts of a Single Man

A Mermaid's Lullaby

Rating: 5.0

I imagine that she was waiting for me
sitting on that glossy stone
watching waiting for my arrival like the coming dawn
on the endless waves of the ocean I sat
drifting on the memories of the past
the boat bounced up and down on the water
shifting in its gentle breeze
yet my mind could find no ease
the horizon stretched before me and I could see forever
and wondered why
there was only one face pointed in the sky
I hung my head and pondered as I sighed
time slipped away as I sat there relaxing
the sun shining my soul pining
as if I was mining in the sands of time
and then I heard a voice calling to me from the depths
as she ascended like the rising stream
I peered in to the distance
taking care not to fall and get wet
then I saw her as her eyes caught mine
and locked in a loving gaze
I was astounded profoundly amazed
there she was in the middle do no where
waving to me and all I could do was stare at this lady fair
the dreaming in me became reality
so I dove into the water with no fear
she held me close and whispered into my ear
within the murky pitch and I could hear so very clear
as she spoke to me
telling me that she heard my words
that the poet wrote so free
I wandered how long I cud hold my breath
was there much time left
and then our lips met and her air became mine
and her breath filled my body and mind

we spoke freely as we swam in the watery core
like to lovers who had known each other before
sheer joy howled in me and I kissed her so long
as we were fearless tearless beneath the waves
in a bind that was so strong
the Poseidon lord had blessed me and I knew I was not alone
as we floated like feathers on air singing ringing
riding the wings of a prayer
one of a single man who found no joy on land
but under the sea was so fresh and so free
my nameless lover had come to find me
it was then that I closed my eyes and felt my body rise
and my form pierce the oceans peak
and I lay drifting for the rose petals of connection
love had left me weak encased in a bubble of perfection
moment later I was back on my ship
sitting there on the un damaged deck
no longer famished for affection
no longer cursed from lost loves shipwreck
she peaked her head out of the water and leaped into the air
as if she could fly
blew me a kiss as her silhouette made a shadow against the moon
and for a moment like picture in a frame she hung there
playing the harp of my heart
so soft and silky and as she disappeared into the blue
now I no longer wonder why
no longer found the sinned eyes and no longer cry
for I knew that there was love waiting for me
and so I returned home and laid down on my pillow
gently humming the tune we now shared
the one of the poet and his diving maiden
the one who taught him how to fly
the one who saved his heart as she gave him the gift of life
held in a mermaids lullaby
