A Young Poet Reads George Oppen's Leviathan Twice

Thursday morning March 30, 2023

"Fear is fear./ But we abandon one another."
—George Oppen, "Leviathan"

He read the poem,
and his young friend

said, "That's the way
to read it; I read it

wrong the first time
around. I didn't realize

it was a poem of sentences,
statements, strong sentiment,

one sentence leading
to the next. I want to

read it again, like you
did", and I assented.
