Aleppo, Syria - I Pray For You! Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

Aleppo, Syria - I Pray For You!

Who says we have humanity in ourselves
I am sitting here in the beautifulness of nature
where trees are green, the sunlight is bright
there are no bombs falling here
there is no debris, no loss of life here
there are no wounded people or soldiers here
but out there are those falling missiles
which like sparks of lightening explode
as the ground thunders and breaks.
Half fallen buildings, deserted roads
no electricity, no water
where are their market supplies
what could they be eating
hungry children crying
the elderly and old with pain in their eyes
deprivation and dust, smoke and fear
their way of life so crucial and cruel.
I wake up and think of myself
if I was there what would be of me
in that country where neighboring nations
watch their Muslim brothers and sisters
live by day and sleep by night in distress
as some get shot, some get massacred
some in those fiery blasts disappear
as bombs keep exploding mercilessly without respite;
months have changed into years
the hands of the clock have turned so many times
but their sufferings have not vanished for once;
my eyes look out at the nature here, leaves so green
I think of them and I wonder whether they wait
for the morning to see the dawn or whether
they wake up knowing anytime can be their end.
