I use to believe and think
That coffee was an grownup drink,
And when it I had first sought
All the adults told me it was too hot.
Then they told me it wasn't meant for me
As I already had enough energy,
My parents drank it all the time
As did my older brother for a dime.
Every restaurant that I ever went to
Adults always ordered and drank that brew,
While I bought and drank only pop
At restaurants or at a shop.
I use to believe and assume
That alcohol was a grownup beverage to consume,
It was always placed out of my reach
"Never touch it! "my parents would preach.
They told me it was meant for adults only
Especially when adults were sad and lonely,
It wasn't offered or served wherever we did dine
Never once did I seen it on a menu or a sign.
My parents mostly drank it at night
When us children were asleep or out of sight,
Sometimes I have heard other adults brag
How they had drank it from a bag.
I use to truly believe
That coffee and alcohol was the drinks grownups did achieve,
They always kept the drinks on higher shelves
Only meant for themselves.
I still remember how all the adults acted
When they drank coffee or alcohol they were impacted,
They sometimes were energized and happy and sometimes grim
They were never really truly them.
Now I am a grownup
Now I always pour an truly adult drink in my glass or cup,
Sometimes I happily share it with my son and daughter
It is a glass or a cup of water.
