An Indian Monsoon Poem by Rajesh Thankappan

An Indian Monsoon

One early June morning
The sky was overcast
Lightning split the sky
With thunder and silvery sparks.

The leaves of coconut palms
Were rustling in the breeze
The prospect of rain
Seem to put them at ease.

The narrow Manivala river
Dried up to mere sands
Could start flowing once again
As if by a magical wand.

The children readying up for school
Were an excited lot
For it was a welcome change
An opportunity to play water sports!

Soon the sky opened up
It was a copious rain
Pools came up everywhere
Overflowing were the drains.

Frogs hidden from the human eye
Soon began to croak
Birds drenched in the rain
Took shelter in trees wind-rocked.

The roadside shopkeepers
Displayed colourful umbrellas in their shops
It was season time for them
Which they would not let elope.

The rain is always welcomed
Welcomed by the human heart
And even by the
Thirsty and parched earth.
