An Indomitable Spirit Poem by Rajesh Thankappan

An Indomitable Spirit

Rating: 5.0

At death he rose to the zenith
Like from the ashes the proverbial phoenix,
It was such a terrible incident
A horrible, blood-curdling accident.

Run over by a truck his body was severed into two
Death was stalking him close and this he very well knew,
He pleaded with his rescuers to have his organs harvested
So that it could be to the needy be donated.

I wonder how a man torn into two large chunks
Could display such humanity and spunk-
Let the indomitable spirit of this fallen man be the wind at our back
At times when we grope in the dark.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
N.B. A 23 year old Bengaluru youth was cut into halves when a truck ran over him in a freak accident. The mishap occurred on the Tumakuru- Bengaluru road on 16.02.2016 morning. The truck carrying loads of sugar tried to overtake Harish Nanjappa, who was riding his motorbike, as a result of which Harish was dragged under the wheels and crushed into halves. The lower body fell several feet away from where he lay. As Harish lay dying on the NH4 highway, he pleaded with people trying to help him to harvest his organs and have them donated to those in need. Harish's eyes were harvested as he had requested and given to a hospital. May his soul R.I.P
