Ancient Trees Poem by Adrian Flett

Ancient Trees

Rating: 5.0

(Vergelegen)

Through covert means unseen
trees commune each with other
resonance in the elevated cover
enabled in wind's airflow stream.

Amid the timbre of the sound
as if Mozart and Debussy reside
among your high resounds
bring energy and delight to abide.

All this surrounds you in a mask
a leafy hallowed cloud of mystery
so rapt, engrossed in the task
of your ancient thoughts and history,

of primeval knowledge you will offer
to reward those who sit still and wait;
no superficial glance from passer-by,
but rather all your wisdom contemplate.

While rooted and barked there long past
limited some say and rooted to the spot
yet your mystical erudition and insight
are still beyond mortal ability to grasp.

As growth rings amass, tally time
and men succeed but fail to think
you've long since acted as carbon sink
a counter to humans' wasteful actions.

Silent monitors of all such worlds
have seen many changes wrought
not only garb, gear outmoded ideas,
but will outlast all future notions brought.
